Revise your recruiting strategy NOW!
Even though the signs are good that Australia is effectively suppressing COVID-19, there is still uncertainty about if/when a vaccine will be both viable and available.
This means that for some period, we will live in an uncertain world, which makes planning difficult. However, don’t let this stop you revising your past and current strategies, even knowing that you might have to be flexible going forward rather than locking anything in.
We recommend assessing your existing talent inventory against the demands on your workforce, while factoring in a range of scenarios that might occur as we progress through different stages of the pandemic.
Do this by setting up a meeting with key staff responsible for hiring across the organisation and think about these two main questions:
1. What is your current headcount and does this reflect what you will need going forward under the range of scenarios COVID-19 might present – effectively, are you in a hiring or freezing mode?
2. If you do need to recruit, how will you actually go about doing this? Do you have the resources in place or do you need external help?
Workforce planning – perform a skills audit
Identifying skills gaps should be part of the strategy process we have just identified above but requires its own focus. In a relatively short time, COVID-19 has already transformed how we do so many things in our broader lives, which means the way organisations and the people within them operate have also had to change. It follows that doing a skill audit is crucial to helping you strategize your recruitment needs and goals.
Consider this: your current staff may have the base professional skill-sets without which they can’t do their jobs in “normal” times, but are they well-equipped for the world we currently find ourselves in?
While many have had no choice but to adapt, others might still be struggling with this. Take GP tele-health consulting, as an example. This has become a huge part of GP consultation and the expectation has been that GPs will just naturally fall into this new aspect of their roles.
However, with the government pushing out the medicare support for tele-consulting, and there even being some talk it may be here to stay, GPs may need to incorporate this in an ongoing way into their roles.
